đã thấy new york 911

War
Lưu Diệu Vân translated from “Chiến Tranh“
sometimes it rains in march in san jose
lightly
not wet enough to soak flows of hair, shirt, shoes’ tips dripping grass dew
wind turns intense at times
and cold
strangely cold and grayish like the clouds up above
piercing cold
as cold as those departing words of lovers
as cold as that moment when two people suddenly realize
the time span of all those years is merely an illusion
sometimes it rains in march in san jose
you ask me on the internet
it’s the 17th today, are you aware of that?
so what?
will there be war tomorrow?
will there be war tomorrow?
will there be war tomorrow?
and blood and bones and tears and …
tonight the footage is still being played, a family of three children
in the army
the son wears a soldier’s hat much bigger than his head
his face is still full of acnes
the adolescent daughter possessing high chest and straight vision
remember what?
“she has three big brothers in the army
some of her little brother can’t even speak yet”
today is the 17th, are you aware of that?
will there be war tomorrow?
you ask me on the internet
bush stands isolated in the white house
red carpet beneath
lonely
will there be war tomorrow?
the screen is filled with your questions
will there be war tomorrow?
war war war …
you were born in 1975
this year you are 28
the vietnam war had passed 28 years
you grew up in the city
i grew up in the village
your life is peaceful, you listen to heavy metal
i spent my childhood running and seeking safety
i listened to “gio linh mother” and “heaven”
i listened to “evening sun” and the sound of gun
had seen burning houses and corpses
had seen the spill of blood and had been wounded
had loved quickly
had abruptly felt apart
had buried a love story
will there be war tomorrow?
in that place we considered far away
that oil world belonging to the people of iraq
saddam with a full beard
islamic
but you had witnessed accidents happening on the street everyday
had seen new york on 9-11
had seen the burning fire in los angeles
earthquake in northern california
iraq is not far from the u.s.
modern war has no battlefront
in the sky, on land
out in the sea in the jungle on the street
and the desert
war within every family
and within each of our love
war?
son of a bitch
those black clouds
those pink bullets
those biochemical bombs
disarrays and partings
and tears
and coldness and blood and darkness
oh, war
i despise you!
war?
son of a bitch
it slaughtered
my father my mother my brother my sisters
it slaughtered
my friends my lovers
my homeland my country
what will earth become tomorrow?
will we still be able to see each other?
will there still be blossoming flowers in my garden tomorrow?
like a poem by nhat hanh
will there be war tomorrow?
oh, war
son of a bitch
i despise you!
